Point Fortin Motorist want their Member of Parliament intervention.

Motorist in Point Fortin who frequently use the Guapo Cap-de-Ville, Main Road are calling on their Member of Parliament to come to their assistance. Motorist are saying for the last five months the road is almost impossible to drive on and they are feeling it in the pockets as they have more car expenses.

One motorist who which to remain anonymous because of the fear of Political victimization says every fortnight drivers have to spend a minimum of five hundred dollars by the mechanic, while one other says this has been going on for a long time now, look around, not only here, but all over Point Fortin. Check the roads to San Fernando from Point man! we have the worst roads in the Eastern Caribbean and we have the Pitch Lake just a few miles away. All the money come from here and we are being treated like dogs, its either we too loyal or dotish. Southsidenewstt asked the motorist to elaborate on his statement, “we either to loyal or we to dotish”, he refused!

Southsidenewstt understands the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) was laying an eight-inch water main along the Cap-de-Ville Main Road, to improve the water supply to the area.

Our reporter contacted WASA for a comment and we were told to contact the Pure Unit of the Ministry of Works, however no one returned our calls, we them sent several text messages to the Member of Parliament via WhatsApp which shows that the messages were read unfortunately up to news time there were no response.

Why Point Fortin people are being punished by Authority

The residents of Point Fortin is now asking the question when will the Mahaica Oval be completed and wants the Ministry of Sport or its agency to come clean with the residents.

Works started on the oval sometime in 2017/18 into 2019, the construction came to a sudden hault today despite being some 45% completed. The construction site remains idle and residents are now seeking answers to thier questions.

Several residents spoke to southsidenewstt expressing their level of sadness. According to one man we spoke too, he said arguable some of the best sports men this country’s produce came from Point Fortin and trained right here at the Oval in some quarters we were the Mecca of sports in Trinidad, “today what a shame!”

The man went on to say I am calling on the Sport’s Ministry to finish the oval and give Point Fortin their primier facility. He went on to says I can recall in the early 60’s late 80’s every sporting team in Trinidad wanted to beat a Point Fortin team so the Whole of Point Fortin would come out to support, that was the glory days man.

Southsidenewstt reached out to the Ministry of Sports in February of this year to find out when the construction will resume on the oval, today despite our calls and email to the Ministry there no answers forthcoming.  

Point Fortin residents fooled again

Concerns are now raised by residents of Point Fortin, whether or not if they will really get the fully operational emergency facility as promised to them.  The residents were promised an Accident and Emergency Department to become operational within ninety-six hours following the conversion of the new Point Fortin Hospital to a Covid 19 facility a few weeks ago. Some three hundred and sixty hours, actually fifteen days the facility which should have been up and running eleven days ago is now passed due.

Early in this month southsidenewstt was fortunate to be on tour with the Member of Parliament and Members of the South West Regional Health Authority Management when we reported what was said at that time, was good news to the residents of the Southern Borough.

Today our reporter visited the proposed A&E Facility at the former state owned Oil Company Petrotrin building in Point Fortin, much to our surprise the emergency facility which was promised to residents of Point Fortin was not up and running and there were no work activity on site. A motorist shouted out! “A woman have to give birth in a car or on the side of the road for things to happen here.”

Southsidenwewstt reached out to the Member of Parliament, Mr. Kennedy Richards Jr. who said he has done his part, the building should have been ready since last week however, it is up to the South West Regional Health Authority to commence operations. The Member of Parliament went to say that he is disappointed as every other citizen in Point Fortin.

Southsidenewstt reached out to the CEO of the South West Regional Health Authority, however calls went unanswered.

Point Fortin to get an Accident and Emergency Department soon

Residents of Point Fortin will soon have an Accident and Emergency Department which is expected within the next ninety six-hour. Southsidenewstt understands that the South West Regional Health Authority and Heritage Petroleum have reached an agreement for the use of the former Petrotrin Medical Facility in Point Fortin.

it was early last month that the new Point Fortin Hospital was turned into a Covid-19 Facility, due to rise in cases in Trinidad. That decision caused some anxiety to mount with the residents of the southwestern community. When southsidenewstt visited the proposed new Accident and Emergency site, workmen were seen working to have the facility ready.

Over the past week the residents of Point Fortin and Environs had to travel to San Fernando for all emergency and auxiliary services. Southsidenewstt reached out to the Member of Parliament for the area who said he was very elated of this new development as this new Accident and Emergency Department comes on stream.

Mt Hope man charged with the murder of Point Fortin businessman Evrol Dublin

A Mt Hope man will appear before a Point Fortin Magistrate virtually on Tuesday charged with the murder of Point Fortin Businessman Evrol Dublin (aka Fives)

Homicide Bureau Officer acting in accordance with the advice of acting DPP Joan Honore Paul has laid the charge against 27 yrs old Ryan Bones aka Ryan Bowen of 1st Private Road, Mt Hope.

On May 20th, 2021, Evrol Dublin, 55 yrs was found dead at his home on Wickham Street, Point Fortin by his children with gunshot wounds to his body. He was last heard from the day before by a female relative.

It is reported that the Investigators found 4.45 spent shell casing, they also found several items belonging to the dead man during their investigations in the possession of the accused.

Cries for the Hospital to continue its primary care and emergency services in Point Fortin

Residents of Point Fortin and Environs are up in arms over the decision made by the Health Ministry to convert the new Point Fortin Hospital to a Covid-19 Facility. Only yesterday patients were transferred from the Point Fortin Hospital to the San Fernando General Hospital in the wee hours of the morning. This came in the wake of the old Area Hospital becoming a Covid-19 step-down facility just over one week ago.

Several residents reached out to southsidenewstt expressing their disgusts with the decision by the South West Regional Health Authority, since they will have to travel to San Fernando or Sipaira for Primary Health Care and Emergency Services which some are afraid they could become more exposed to the dreaded virus. Southsidenewstt understands, thirty thousand residents will be directly affected by the decision. One caller also says, after waiting some forty years for a new hospital it is now taken away from us in a flash, we again have to travel to San Fernando.

In a release yesterday, SWRHA says the Point Fortin Health Centre will remain open from 8 am – 8 pm daily; however, there’s no mention of Cedros and Icacos. When we visited the Point Fortin Health Centre around 7 pm on today, the facility was closed.

Some callers to our newsroom have since suggested alternative sites to house Covid-19 patients such as the Community Centre in Techier, New Village, Gonzales, Lot 10, the Indoor Arena, and the former Petrotrin Administration Building. Southsidenewstt understand since the new hospital became a Covid-19 facility yesterday it is at near capacity with residents for the southwest area of Trinidad.

Southsidenewstt attempted to reach the Chief Executive Officer of the South West Regional Health Authority; however, calls to his mobile phone went unanswered.

Point Fortin New Hospital set to become a Covid -19 Facility

The New Point Fortin Hospital is to be made a Covid-19 Facility within the next twenty hours or less. According to information reaching southsidenewstt from 1 am today the patients at the hospital were being transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital.

it was only last week the Old Point Fortin Area Hospital was commissioned as a step down facility, however, we are told that the Hospital is up to full capacity.

Southsidenewstt contacted the South West Regional Health Authority and we were told that the Authority would be making a statement within the next two hours.

Murder in Point Fortin

A man is discovered shot to death at his home in Point Fortin. He has been identified as Evrol Dublin (a.k.a. Fives) of Wickham Street, Point Fortin.

According to reports, residents of the area told the investigator they heard a loud noise around 10 pm last night; however, they believed it was mangoes falling from the nearby tree onto the rooftop as they have grown accustomed to. However, this morning Mr Dublin was discovered shot to death by a relative around 9 am.

Police say they have no known motive for the murder. Region Three Homicide Officers are continuing investigation.

Point Fortin Mayor tested positive for Covid-19

The Point Fortin Mayor confirmed that she was tested positive for Covid -19 in a release from the Mayor’s Office. A short while ago, Her Worship said, her diagnosis returned positive today. She went on to say that she is working along with the Ministry of Health and is following all health protocols and contact tracing at this time as she remains in quarantine for the next fourteen day.

The Mayor urges her burgesses to continue to observe all the health protocols and to stay safe at time as we all are in this together.

Police arrested several people for breach of the Health Regulations in Point Fortin.

Police have detained several people in Point Fortin for breaching the Covid-19 regulations, according to reports reaching southsidenewstt.

Shortly after three pm today, Police went to the Uprising Bar, located on E- Street, Fanny Village, Point Fortin, popularly known as Benjamin’s Bar. They observed several people inside the bar liming which was close at the time.

The officer arrested the bar owner and his patrons and took them to the Point Fortin Police Station.

The men and women are expected to be charged for breaching the Public Health Regulation 2021. It was only yesterday the Prime Minister asked the country to restrain for congregating in a serious effort to fight the Covid-19 virus. All Bars and Restaurants etc. etc. have been closed until May 23, 2021. It’s only today the country recorded 326 new cases and four more deaths.
