Point Fortin supports Denoon

The Point Fortin Executive of the People’s National Movement is fully supporting retired Deputy Police Commissioner Donald Denoon, as the candidate for the upcoming General Election. Mr Denoon had thirty-nine (39) unblemished years as a Police Officer with a wealth of experience and is well known in the community of Point Fortin. He managed the PNM campaign in the district of Erin/Palo Seco in the last local election. He is also a mentor of ad risk youths in the community. Mr Denoon was born in Fullerton Village in Cedros. He is also a member of the local school board in Point Fortin. His father was a retired school principal. His family members play an essential role in the development of youths in the community.

A reliable source has informed SouthsidenewsTT that the executive did not support the Mayor as the candidate, as they felt that he is young and his contribution will be best suited in his current capacity at this time so that he will gain further experience. SouthsidenewsTT has been informed that the screening for candidates will be held on Thursday 28th May 2020.

Faces – Off For La Brea Constituency

The race is on to represent the constituency of La Brea for People’s National Movement for the upcoming General Election. The vice-chairman of the party and former Public Utility Minister Robert Le Hunte is challenging the incumbent Member of Parliament Nicole Ollivierre to represent the constituency for the next five years. SouthsidenewsTT understands that some eighty percent of the constituency party groups are supporting. Le Hunte to be the party choice however his shock resignation from the Rowley cabinet last week is said to be posing a severe challenge to him to represent the constituency. We have been reliably informed that the screening committee will meet next week to decide who will represent the party in the upcoming General Election.

People’s National Movement Point Fortin constituency will have to look for a new candidate for the next General Election as the party has rejected incumbent Member of Parliament Edmund Dillon, according to information reaching SouthsidenewsTT, following the party’s screening exercise on Saturday.

The party’s central executive has asked the constituency to look for a new Candidate,.SouthsidenewsTT was also informed by a well-placed source inside the Point Fortin constituency there were several discrepancies during the nomination process.
Mr Dillion, a former Chief of Defence Staff, is currently the Housing Minister. He also held the portfolio of National Security Minister from September 9, 2015, to August 5, 2018

Prime Minister Dr the Hon. Keith Rowley has advised the President, Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes of the following:

Mr Robert Le Hunte has tendered his resignation as a Senator and Minister of Public Utilities with effect from May 16, 2020, and I have accepted.

In light of the above, and in accordance with the provisions of Sections 3(9) and 43(2)(e) of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, I advise that with immediate effect you revoke the appointment of Mr Robert Le Hunte as a Senator and Minister of Public Utilities.

As a consequence, I advise that with immediate effect and in accordance with sections 76(3), 79(1) and 40(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, you:

(i) assign Mr Fitzgerald Hinds as Minister of Public Utilities, in addition to the discharge of his normal duties as Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs; and

(ii) appoint Mr Jason Williams as a Senator

17 Persons Arrested for Various Offences in Northern Division

Seventeen persons were arrested for various offences between the hours of 7:00 am on Wednesday 13th May to 3:00 am Thursday 14th May 2020 by officers who conducted anti-crime exercises in the Northern Division.

In a statement from the TTPS during an anti-crime exercise, the officers in the Tunapuna District arrested six persons for outstanding maintenance warrant in the Arima District. Seven persons for Breach of COVID-19 Regulations.
Aman was also arrested for larceny of a quantity of premium alcohol, keys and automatic gate controls. Three persons for gang-related offences were also arrested.

Investigations are continuing .

Medical Officer Having Challenges to contact Trace

The county medical officer of health for Caroni reveals says her colleagues have been experiencing some challenges when it comes to contact tracing.

Speaking at the Ministry of Health daily media briefing today Dr Jennie St.Bernard said county medical officers of health are trying to keep on top of COVID-19 symptom tracking.

However, she said the exercise is not always an easy one, as persons who may have been exposed to COVID-19 are sometimes unwilling to corporate.  

So far the ministry of health has confirmed that 792 persons have been put through community testing and all results have returned negative

Police seized Marijuana in south

Southwestern Police has arrested three-person and seized 1.1 kilos of marijuana according to reports. Around 4.30 pm Tuesday, afternoon the officers were mobile petrol along the Southern main Oropouche when there had cause to stop a Kia Sportage SUV vehicle. A search of the vehicle was carried out by the officers. Where the discovery was made. The three occupants of the SUV was arrested and charge for the possession of Marijuana for trafficking. They will appear before the Siparia Magistrates Court later today

PM announces phases for reopening of T&T

In case you missed it, here are the key highlights from today’s Media Conference, hosted by Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley:

▪️Dr Rowley announced today that adjustments will be made to the COVID-19 Public Health Ordinance Regulations.

▪️Dr Rowley said the adjustments will take place on a phased basis. Each phase will be determined by the results from the COVID-19 Community testing and monitoring done by the Ministry of Health.

▪️Phase One: Effective May 11th–23rd May 2020

▪️The Stay-at-Home measures for non-essential workers will remain in place with the following exceptions:

▪️Food establishments, restaurants and vendors will be allowed to operate daily until 8 pm. Only takeout, curbside pickup, deliveries and drive-thru will be allowed. All street food businesses will be allowed to resume. No in-house dining allowed.

▪️Members of the public will be allowed to engage in restricted outdoor exercise – that is, no contact or team sporting events.

▪️People will be allowed to walk, hike, run in groups of no more than five. Persons must keep six feet away from each other. Masks must be worn during all outdoor activities.

▪️Hardware, plumbing supplies and electrical stores to operate during the hours of 8 am-4 pm.

▪️Supermarkets to close at 6 pm.

▪️Pharmacies to close 8 pm.

▪️Approval has been granted for three of the country’s major commercial companies to operate. TCL, Nu Iron and WITCO have been allowed to restart operations.

▪️If COVID- 19 numbers remain low, Phase 2 can commence – 24th May – 6th June 2020.

▪️Reopening of the country’s whole manufacturing sector.

▪️All Public Sector Construction can recommence.

▪️50 percent capacity in public transport will continue.

▪️Phase 3 (7th June – 20th June 2020)

▪️All of the public service will return to work with elements of flexitime where possible.

▪️All private sector construction may recommence at that time.

▪️Consideration will be made for public transportation to resume to 75 percent.

▪️These undermentioned phases will include the reopening of the following:

▪️Phase 4: The reopening of malls and beaches

▪️Phase 5: The reopening of cinemas.

▪️Phase 6: The reopening of the country’s borders.

Seven Arrested for Illegal Quarrying and Breach of Covid-19 Regulations

Seven persons were arrested in connection with illegal quarrying activities and breaching the Covid-19 Regulations. They were held during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Cumuto district by officers of the Northern Division’s Major Operations Team.

According to reports officers was conducted an exercise between 9:00 am and 11:00 am, on Monday 4th May 2020, in the Cumuto forest. It included officers of the Operation Strike Back Team, the Inspector of State Lands and personnel of the Forestry Division and Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.

During the exercise, officers proceeded to an area of land where they observed two excavators, a front loader, and trucks being operated by a group of men.

The operators were asked to show documentation granting them permission to operate during the Covid-19 Regulations.

It was subsequently discovered by the Inspector of State Lands that the area being excavated was State Lands and no permission was given by any agency to have quarrying conducted.

Forestry officials also indicated that no permission was granted to destroy trees on the area of land.

Seven men, ages 32 to 65, of the Chaguanas, La Horquetta, and Cumuto districts were arrested in connection with the matter.

Investigations are continuing .

Minors Among Six Held with Gun in Car in Arima

Three minors were among six persons arrested after officers of the Arima Criminal Investigations Department seized a firearm and a quantity of ammunition during an anti-crime exercise, conducted in the Arima district last night.

According to reports officers were on mobile patrol along the Mausica Lands, in Arima, around 7:30 pm, on Monday 4th May 2020, when on reaching the vicinity of Alenore Gardens, they had cause to stop and search a silver Nissan AD motor vehicle with six occupants.

The search resulted in officers finding a pistol loaded with five rounds of ammunition, one black imitation pistol and two masks in the vehicle.

Six male suspects ages 16 to 20, from the Arima, La Horquetta, and Malabar districts, were arrested in connection with the finds.

Investigations are ongoing.
