Two men jailed for assaulting women

Two men were jailed this week after pleading guilty to assaulting women in separate incidents.

O’NEIL TODD 24, of La Brea, was charged for the offence of assault by beating on Wednesday 12th August 2020. He appeared before Magistrate Alicia Chankar at the Siparia Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 13th August 2020. He pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 120 days’ hard labour.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday 11th August 2020 when the accused arrived at the home he shared with the victim in a drunken state. He became annoyed and dealt the victim several blows about the body with his fist after she asked him to bathe.

A report was made to the La Brea Police Station, and officers responded. The suspect was arrested. The victim sought medical attention at the Point Fortin Area Hospital and was transferred the to San Fernando General Hospital, where she was treated and discharged.

The matter was referred to the South Western Division, Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU) based at the La Brea Police Station. Head of the Gender-Based Violence Unit spearheaded investigations, and the charge was laid by WPC Williams.

In the second incident, the victim was at home with her common-law husband on Thursday 13th August 2020, when an argument occurred. The man became annoyed and dealt the victim a blow to the left side of her face with a two-litre bottle. He then pointed a knife at her and threatened to kill her.

A report was made by the victim and officers of the GBVU, South Western Division responded. The man was arrested after being identified while walking along the roadway as officers proceeded to the La Brea Police Station with the victim.

KEITH BRANKER 27, a labourer from Rousillac, was charged by WPC Marcano for common assault and breach of a Protection Order. The Protection Order had been obtained by the victim against the accused on March 21, 2018 at the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court and is valid for three (3) years.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Alicia Chankar at the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer to the charges. He pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to nine months’ hard labour on each charge, to be served consecutively.

COVID scare at the New Point Fortin Hospital

Operations at part of the New Point Fortin Hospital had to shut down and staff evacuated as a pre-cautionary measure this morning, when an employee with a contracting firm working at facility exhibited flu-like Symptoms. The employee has been sent for testing for the COVID 19 virus.

Contacted by southsidenewstt Communication Manager of the South West Regional Health Authority Kevon Gervais confirmed the incident. He said all the necessary protocols were put in place at the facility, and further went on to say that the building has been thoroughly sanitized.

Mr. Gervais also said, normal operations will resume tomorrow.

Two Men Arrested for Arms & Ammo in Point Fortin

Two men were arrested for possession of firearms and ammunition in separate incidents during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Point Fortin district between the hours of 6 am, and 10 am on Friday 7th August 2020.

According to report’s at 7:50 am yesterday, officers went to an apartment along TNA Road #1, Point Ligoure, Point Fortin, where a priority offender was located, and a search conducted. Officers found one silver and brown object resembling a pistol with 14 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition under a mattress located in a room. He was arrested for the offence.

Later that day at around 8:45 am the officers proceeded to Beach Road, in Point Ligoure, Point Fortin at the home of another suspect where a search was carried out , and one black and rusty object resembling a revolver was found inside a kitchen sink. He was also arrested for the offence.

The exercise was coordinated by Snr Supt (Ag) John, Supt (Ag) Ramesar, Asp Ramdeen, Insp (Ag) Simon and was supervised by Sgt (Ag) Singh and included officers of the Point Fortin CID and Point Fortin Municipal Task Force.

Soldier Sent on Self Quarantine as a Pre-caution

There are reports reaching southsidenewstt that some fifty-nine members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force have been asked to self-quarantine as a precautionary measure as a Medical Officer working at one of the facility have tested positive for COVID 19.

Detail remains sketchy. We attempted to reach the TTDF Communication Officer, but our effects were unsuccessful.

Point Fortin PH Driver Granted Bail for sexual assault

A 25 yrs old PH driver was granted $25,000.00 bail for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. According to reports, she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a PH driver while travelling in a taxi on the Cap de Ville, Point Fortin area.
She reported the matter to Southwestern CPU. PC Cruickshank conducted enquire into the circumstances surrounding the victim’s report, which resulted in the man’s arrest on Monday 27th July 2020.

The PH driver of Cap de Ville, Point Fortin was charged with one count of indecent assault.

He appeared before the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Virtual Court on Tuesday 28th July 2020 where he was granted $25,000 bail with surety and was ordered not to communicate with the victim directly or indirectly and to report to the Point Fortin Police Station every Tuesday.

Matters were adjourned to Tuesday 25th August, 2020.

Fifteen Venezuelans held in Santa Flora

Santa Flora Police have arrested fifteen Venezuelans for entering this country illegally. The arrest were made around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. The group were held as they attempted to leave the area. Information reaching southsidenewstt, the officers believed the illegal immigrants entered Trinidad sometime last night, two nationals were also arrested.

The Venezuelans will be housed in Chaguaramas where they will be quarantined for fourteen days before being charged for entering Trinidad illegally. Investigations are continuing.

Point Fortin Teenager Goes Missing

A Point Fortin teenager has gone missing. She is sixteen years old Shaniqua Alexander of Pilgrim Street, New Village, Point Fortin. Shaniqua was last seen at her home around 6:00 a.m. on 19.07.20. Anyone with information about Shaniqua’s whereabouts, please call the Point Fortin Police Station at 648-2426, 999, 555 or 911.

The Point Fortin Borough Corporation Municipal Police received a brand new Isuzu vehicle in their efforts to fight crime. This morning Chief Executive Office of Construction Services and Supplies Ltd, Frankie Ali presented the key for the Van to His Worship the Mayor Kennedy Richards Jr. Mr Ali said he is prepared to do their part in the efforts to keep the Borough safe. The Mayor went on to say he is very grateful for the donation and welcome it at this time and the gesture will go a long way.
